This book responds to widespread anxiety about the loss of 'agency', The origin of the concept of the Will is traced through theology, social philosophy, psychology and virtue ethics until Will is replaced with agency in postwar Structuralism. Here agency is not the opposite of structure but simply the means by which structure acts. The book offers an alternative to sociology to show how a person can can indeed make a difference in the world. The work relies on a synthesis of Hegel, Vygotsky, MacInytre's virtue ethics and Anthony Giddens' critique of Structuralism.
